about

Frequently Asked Questions

How does ketamine work in therapy?

Ketamine can help reset neural pathways in the brain, making it easier to break free from negative thought patterns and emotional cycles. It is most effective when combined with professional therapy.

From a neurochemical perspective there are a number of things that happen in the brain during KAP that you can read about here.

Is ketamine-assisted therapy right for me?

This therapy is often recommended for those who haven’t responded to traditional treatments. A thorough third-party medical assessment will be conducted to help determine if it’s the right approach for your needs.

What should I expect during a session?

You’ll be in a comfortable setting, guided by a therapist. The session involves self-administering tablet(s) of Ketamine and engaging in talk therapy, with the experience tailored to your comfort level.

Are there any side effects?

Ketamine has a record of being safe and has been used for many years in much higher doses for anesthesia without causing breathing problems. Our setting and medical monitoring are intended to minimize Ketamine’s side effects as much as possible. However, there are some side effects to be aware of.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Mild Effects: You might feel nausea, a brief rise in blood pressure, or changes in how you see, hear, and feel things. Some people feel like they're floating or have a mix of senses (like hearing colors).

  • Less Common Effects: Dizziness, sleepiness, slurred speech, or feeling confused. Some may feel anxious, have a headache, or very rarely, vomit.

  • Precautions: It is recommend not to eat for at least 4 hours before your session to prevent nausea. Due to possible blurred vision and dizziness, you’ll be advised to lie down, close your eyes, or use an eye mask until the effects wear off.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions you need will depend on your personal treatment plan. You'll first meet with a medical provider to figure out the right dose and how often you should have the treatment. If approved, you'll start with 2 dosed sessions. After those sessions, you'll have a follow-up meeting with your provider to adjust your plan if needed, then get medication for 6 more sessions.

Most people do 8 to 12 sessions, spaced 1 to 2 weeks apart. Some may need booster sessions, which means coming back for 2 to 4 more sessions about 8 months to a year later. This all depends on your specific diagnosis, treatment plan, and how you respond to Ketamine.

Do you accept insurance and how much will it cost?

Evolve’s services for Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy typically range from $4,000 to $4,100 for initial intake, preparation, integration, and 8 dosed sessions (which last 2-3 hours). Medical evaluations are about $630, making the estimated total around $4,700 to $5,000 for the full program. While I don’t accept insurance for dosed sessions, I can help file out-of-network claims for preparation and integration through Mentaya. For payment assistance, CareCredit is also accepted—learn more here.
